Coming in January 2021
a poetry cycle for performance
by Rich Orloff
On March 18, 2020, a few days after New York City began to shelter in place, I looked out the window, and a calming poem entered my head.
Since then dozens of poems have spoken to me, creating an ongoing chronicle of my experience of the pandemic. They vary significantly
in tone, but I think of each of them as a kind of “prayer poem”,
using simple words to connect with something transcendent.
As I’m a playwright and not a poet by trade, I created these poems
to be both read and performed. Although each of them can stand alone, I think there’s a dramatic arc to them, just as I see the pandemic having its own dramatic arc, even if, as I write this, the ending is still unknown.
